Service in Two Uniforms Posted: Wednesday, May 18, 2011
Former public servant (in the police force) Brian Inman, has written a book about police and public servants who served in the forces during WWII.

The book itself is not a story but more a chronology of events that led to the acutal individuals' enlistment and their subsequent service.  The book does not cover any persons who served in the war and subsequently joined the police but rather those who were members, either police, cadets or public servants, who enlisted.

At the time of the Second World War the NSW Police and the Department was a reserved occupation and was not subject to having their members called up;  indeed police were not particularly encouraged to leave the service or join the Malitia even after the conflict in the Pacific commenced.

The services, like the police, were required to  undertaken their normal duties, which in some cases escalated during that period.  Much of their work included chasing black marketeers and other related crimes.

Many individuals felt the need to serve and 176 police and 78 public service officers enlisted, the overwhelming majority of these into the RAAF.

Two ex-cadets who come to mind are Jimmy Pyne and George Peacock both of whom are still in the land of the living!!!!!

The book goes into some detail regarding their service.  A range of statistics are available, including those individuals who were killed in action, saw overseas service or gained honours and awards and commissions.

This information and related detail is contained whithin the many appendices.

If you wish to purchase a copy of the book it will cost you $25 which includes postage.  Simply contact Brian on 96345398.
